Shaw Introduces Competition for Netflix

The movie rental landscape has changed significantly with a shift from a brick and mortar based business to an online streaming medium. Last year movie streaming giant Netflix introduced their service offerings in Canada but failed to gain the interest of Canadians due to the lack of recent movie titles. Furthermore, this announcement led ISPs to more aggressively price their Internet plans with strict caps.

Shaw communications, a large cable and Internet provider, has introduced a new service that enables Canadians to stream unlimited content from their service without impacting their monthly data cap. Rogers communications, another large cable and Internet provider, have Rogers on Demand but doesn’t quite size up these online streaming channels.

So how do the two services compare? Netflix, although rather older content, offers more than 10,000 titles and is aggressively priced at 7.99 per month and doesn’t require a cable subscription. Shaw offers 366 titles for 11.99 per month and requires a cable subscription but will not impact your monthly cap. So which would you pick and why?

The movie rental landscape has changed and it’s exciting to see the availability of more titles at a much more affordable rate.
